Core Functions and Working Principles

All are powdered binders produced via spray-drying specific polymer emulsions. When added to dry-mix mortar, they redisperse into an emulsion upon contact with water and form a polymer film as the mortar cures, thereby significantly enhancing bond strength, flexibility, crack resistance, and water resistance. Fundamentally, they all modify inorganic cement-based materials with organic polymers, endowing the product with both strength and toughness.

Core Differences

The primary distinction lies in the chemical composition of the base polymer: VAE is based mainly on vinyl acetate and ethylene; VAc-Acrylate incorporates acrylates into the vinyl acetate base; and Acrylate is a pure acrylate system. This results in tiered differences regarding water resistance, weather resistance, flexibility, and cost. Performance ranks from low to high as VAE < VAc-Acrylate < Acrylate, with costs increasing in the same order. VAE is the choice for standard, general-purpose needs, offering the best cost-performance ratio. VAc-Acrylate (or blends with pure acrylates) is selected when improved water resistance and flexibility are required and the budget allows. Acrylate is chosen for harsh outdoor environments where weather resistance and waterproofing demands are extremely high.

VAE Copolymer Redispersible Polymer Powder (VAE Copolymer RDP)

VAE copolymer redispersible polymer powder is a powdered polymer produced by spray-drying an emulsion of vinyl acetate (VAc) and ethylene (E). Its core chemical composition is a vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer. This type of powder exhibits excellent adhesion to porous mineral substrates such as cement and concrete, significantly improving mortar flexibility, workability, and bond strength. With a balance of good overall performance and cost-effectiveness, it is currently the most widely used and best-value type of redispersible polymer powder on the market. Its main limitation is relatively restricted hydrolysis resistance and durability in environments characterized by long-term dampness or high alkalinity. Typical applications include tile adhesives, base-coat mortars for external thermal insulation systems (ETICS), interior wall putties, and repair mortars. Representative brands and models include WACKER’s 5044N and Zhuonuo’s RDP-503.

Vinyl Acetate-Acrylate Copolymer Redispersible Polymer Powder (VAc-Acrylate Copolymer RDP)

VAc-Acrylate copolymer RDP is a powdered polymer produced by spray-drying a copolymer of vinyl acetate (VAc) and acrylate monomers (such as butyl acrylate). By incorporating acrylate segments into the vinyl acetate backbone, this type of RDP offers superior water resistance and flexibility compared to standard VAE copolymer RDPs; its performance profile and cost generally fall between general-purpose VAE and high-performance pure acrylate RDPs. In practical applications, blending VAc-Acrylate (or VAE) RDP with pure acrylate RDP can sometimes yield synergistic effects, reducing mortar water demand and shortening setting times while enhancing bond strength after water immersion. A representative model is SETAKY-745N7, which is based on a vinyl acetate/ethylene/acrylate copolymer.

Acrylate Copolymer Redispersible Polymer Powder (Acrylate Copolymer RDP)

Acrylate copolymer RDP is a powdered polymer produced by spray-drying a copolymer of pure acrylate monomers (such as methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate). This type of RDP exhibits exceptional water resistance, weatherability, UV aging resistance, and chemical resistance, alongside outstanding bond strength and flexibility. It represents the highest-performing category of redispersible polymer powders but also commands a higher cost, placing it in the high-end product range. Due to its excellent outdoor durability, it is particularly suitable for applications requiring high standards of exterior wall decoration and protection, such as premium external thermal insulation finishing system (ETICS) coatings, high-performance waterproof mortars, and sealants. Representative brands and models include the MP2050 and FX3250 acrylic copolymer series from KAWA INTERNATIONAL.
